Six of its stars are visible to the naked eye, but around 250 bluish stars can be seen through a telescope. The name originated to represent the six companies that were part of the group at that time. In the West, the group is called the Pleiades, in China, Mao, and in Japan, Subaru ("governor" or "cluster"). In Japan, it is also known as Mutsuraboshi ("Six Stars"), a name under which it frequently appears in very old Japanese documents such as the Kojiki and Manyosyu, and in literature such as Makura-no-Soshi. Clearly, this is one of the most beloved groups of the Japanese since ancient times.
