Unhan was established based on the Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesia Number 5 of 2011 dated February 7, 2011 concerning the Defense University as a Higher Education Institution Organized by the Government. Unhan is academically supervised by the Ministry of Education and Culture in this case carried out by the Directorate General of Higher Education and functionally supervised by the Ministry of Defense. Unhan is domiciled in Jakarta, Bogor, and Bandung. Unhan in English can use the name " Indonesia Defense University ".
Based on the Decree of the Minister of Defense Number KEP/229/M/XII/2020 Concerning the Logo, Stamp and Header of the Defense University, it is stipulated that the Defense University has a round logo in the form of a series of circular ropes in black and white, Garuda Pancasila, a keris blade with a Gajah Mada head handle and yellow sharpened bamboo, a white open book, and a red ribbon. At the bottom is written the words PRADITYA WIRATAMA NAGARA BHAKTI and a blue circle with the words UNIVERSITAS PERTAHANAN REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA in white.
