The Orion™ TD-516 combines a dual AC motor configuration of up to 1,600 hp with a maximum continuous drilling torque of more than 80,000 ft-lbs (108,000+ Nm) and maximum pressure rating of up to 10,000 psi (with additional high-pressure kit). At the same time, the compact footprint allows integration into a wide range of existing and new-built rigs, helping contractors make effective use of existing assets while minimizing modification requirements.

A key design consideration was operational flexibility. The Orion™ TD-516 can be installed with motors positioned either at the front or rear of the unit, enabling adaptation to different mast and derrick configurations. Fast-disconnect service loops, multiple mounting options, and an integrated onboard hydraulic power unit further support efficient rig moves and streamlined installation.

The system also incorporates features aimed at improving day-to-day operations, including 360-degree pipe-handler rotation, increased link tilt capacity, integrated motor brakes, gearbox cooling, and optional Condition-Based Maintenance capabilities. To mitigate stick-slip and drilling vibrations, the top drive can optionally be equipped with Soft Torque Z™ technology.
